30 Day Challenge: Day 9

Day 9: How Important I Think Education Is

Knowledge is light, Ignorance is darkness. I don't know about Education, but can education be the battery Knowledge needs to shine?
I don't need a theory to know how important education is, neither do I need a rule measure to measure its importance but one popular saying we all believe in is 'If you think education is expensive, try ignorance'.
I know a lot of people that have tried ignorance and today, they are referred to as success stories. We all know Bill Gates story, Steve Jobs nko? Do you know his story? #GoFigure. I won't even go into the musical side of education cos we all know the difference between, 2Face, D'Banj and Naeto C (I won't even mention Kanye West).
On a scale of 1 to 10, for me, education won't be rated more than 4, why? Education in itself is important but more important is the knowledge derived and not just education, that's why we have the term 'educated illiterate'.
Education gives you the needed proof, the certificates, the exposure, the connections and maybe the ideas. It can also present you with the knowledge but it is left to you to choose whether you want to be educated or knowledgeable.
Education is simply 'Instruction and teaching' while Knowledge is 'the act of knowing'. Most people are educated, they've successfully completed the 'instruction and teaching' stage but they are not knowledgeable, as they have refused or are yet to 'know'. Now I guess that should answer the question about why Nigeria is still where they are today. We value education more than knowledge, our emphasis is on the certificate rather that the knowledge derived from it.
A consultant once said the best students are not always the brightest, he had his facts and figures all well researched and he concluded by saying they are the best all cos they have got good short term memory which is good for reading and cramming for exams which after the exam, they hardly remember 70% of what they knew while writing the exam.
Am not against education and I don't believe western education is evil. In fact I believe education is important but more important is the knowledge derived from it.
I hope with these few points of mine, I have been able to convince and not confuse you that education is important but more important is the knowledge derived from it.
Thank You!

The line between your definition of knowledge and education is very thin. Sure, sum garner success without education (2baba for example). But it depends on definition of education. Remember in those social studies class that we were taught diff types of education; formal, informal and semi-formal. 2baba may have not completed his western education, but he educatated himself; musically. He must have learnt the ropes, practiced his voice and train himself lyrically. Same goes for Gates, we all know he dropped out of school, but it was to berra educate himself on softwares, hardware and computing.....
I think education is defined as the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge.. they both walk hand in hand.

I think where most people fail is when they refuse to add to their education. It's just a stepping stone. Knowledge and experience counts far more than education. I'd settle for the former too cos dey can provide d instruction and teaching, albeit in an informal way. Haven't you heard of "School of Hard knocks"?
Now, that's what am tAlking about!!!
